This genre is often attributed to the German duo Basic Channel, who were inspired by Aphex Twin's "underwater" sound.

Key figures in Dub Techno include Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, known for their "Round" series. Basic Channel's influence on the genre is significant, though it has also contributed to a stereotype of pretentious techno fans.

Characterized by spacey, dubby sounds with heavy bass effects and reverb, Dub Techno shares similarities with Ambient Techno. However, the fan bases of these two genres often clash due to perceived pretentiousness.

In recent years, Dub Techno has evolved beyond its German and American roots, with artists from various locations contributing to its development. The genre's identity has become somewhat diluted, often being confused with or incorporated into other genres such as Deeptech, Minimal Tech, or Psydub.
