The genre largely emerged due to Warp Records, though its defining album was ironically not released on the label. Initially, the term "Ambient Techno" was used to describe the fusion of droning ambient synths with hyperactive breakbeats—elements that set it apart from traditional Ambient, Chill Out, and Downtempo music. The label was likely a marketing decision rather than an accurate genre classification.

As the term failed to stick, there was an effort to rebrand artists like Aphex Twin and similar producers under the name "Intelligent Dance Music" (IDM)—a misleading label, as the music was not necessarily intelligent, danceable, or, in some cases, conventionally musical. Despite this, the name persisted and attracted a niche audience of electronic music enthusiasts who were more interested in analysis than dancing.

Recognizing this emerging market, Warp Records launched the Artificial Intelligence series, catering to listeners who appreciated electronic music in more introspective settings. The series introduced artists such as Autechre, Biosphere, Higher Intelligence Agency, The Black Dog, and Polygon Window (Richard D. James) to a broader audience, shaping the perception of IDM as an experimental and intellectual branch of electronic music.
